Solaris Operating Environment upgrades on the system with Sun StorEdge
RAID Manager software installed, Absence of these precautions could result
in data loss or possibly the data corruption. When upgrading from Solaris
2.6 to any higher Solaris version, a copy of the file /kernel/drv/sd.conf
needs to be backed up and then restored after the upgrade. If this action
is not taken then an upgrade will result in repeated error messages upon
boot up and an inability to scan the array module

The replacement procedure
for the SCSI controller board (ESM card) in a D1000 disk array is not well-documented.
If the proper procedure is not followed, complications can arise which might
lead to data loss. This FIN describes correct ESM replacement procedures
and gives examples of additional problems which might occur as a result
of an ESM card failure and its subsequent replacement. Replacement of the
D1000 ESM card may result in drives being "failed" in one or more drive
trays of an A3x00/A3500FC array. A failure of an ESM card will cause the
entire D1000 tray to go offline. As a result, all disks in the D1000 tray
will go offline until the ESM card is replaced. |

On an A3x00 disk subsystem,
one or more disks may go offline unexpectedly during operation, which can
cause applications to fail or lose data. With no warning, one to a few disks
(LUNs) may go OFFLINE. Some come back on their own, however the one which
has the most hits will go offline periodically until the system is rebooted.
The problem will reappear. Replacing disks does not solve the problem. The
following type of messages will be reported in /var/adm/messages:

to deadlock causing interruption of data availability. The
deadlock condition is most likely to occur at times of controller state
changes including failover, failback, mode change from passive to
active or vice versa or upgrade from RM6.1.x to RM6.22. The deadlock is
most likely to occur on A3x00 modules running firmware 02.05.06.39 but
deadlock has also occurred using firmware 02.05.06.32. |

would update the new FC controllers. Therefore, over-write of the FC NVSRAM

In order for RM 6 software
to configure multiple LUNs, it adds entries to the sd.conf and rdriver.conf
files. The add16lun.sh script is a case in point as it enlarges the sd.conf
for 16 LUNs for all targets. However, there is bug in the Solaris kernel
that sometimes causes a panic if a *.conf file is greater than 8k bytes.

When a RAID 0 LUN with a mounted
file system experiences a failure that shows a "dead" LUN status, the recovery
procedure needs to be augmented. If the Recovery Guru is unable to unmount
the file system, the recovery will not complete, even though there is a
message indicating the recovery can proceed even with mounted file systems.
Note that RAID 0 LUN's behave like non-RAID devices. The processes doing
I/O to the dead LUN need to be stopped and Recovery Guru re-run so the unmount
will complete and the recovery can proceed. |

(SEVM2.5 patch) is applied on an operational system, and the system is rebooted,
some storage devices may appear to be missing or longer listed. This symptom
may also be experienced when installing EVM2.6, upon execution of vxinstall,
not all of the storage devices on the system will be available for EVM to
use. This may happen on systems that have a mixture of storage devices,
although there have been reports of systems with a single SPARCstorage Array
attached, experiencing loss of access to some of the disks after application
of this patch. The device loss is due to a modification that had been made
to the DMP driver binary file in this release of the patch. Systems that
have disabled DMP operation will not experience this problem. |
