Sun Enterprise[tm] 450 Server: Repair Procedures

This section provides the most common repair procedures for the Enterprise 450. The written procedures below are links to the Ultra Enterprise 450 Server Owner's Guide (805-0429).

Clustered Hardware Note: When repairing a clustered system, you should replace server components by first switching over the data services to the functioning server, halting the host to be serviced, powering down the host, and then performing the hardware procedure to replace the component. Following the procedure, the logical hosts should be switched back to the default masters.

CPU Module
  • Tuning the ecache_scan_rate parameter of the Solaris cache scrubber provides improved Ecache parity error protection on non-mirrored SRAM UltraSPARC II-based systems (FIN I0755-1).
  • OS mapping versus physical location of CPU modules for E420R, E450, U80 and Netra t1400/t1405 systems may lead to incorrect module replacement (FIN I0749-1).
  • The current diagnostic procedure to identify the faulty CPU module from CPU Ecache parity errors is flawed (FIN I0570-3).
  • Finding bad CPU in E450 (SRDB 21220).
Disk Drive
  • 18.2GB and 36GB IBM disk drives may be susceptible to early life failures problem (FIN I0724-2).
  • Seating problems may occur when adding a disk (FIN I0476-1).
  • 18GB and 36GB IBM disk drives experiencing high failure rate in high humidity and high temperature environments (FCO A0182-1).
  • Disks not being recognized in an E450 (9gb and 18Gb) (SRDB 21478 ).
  • How to find a disk in a Enterprise [TM] 450 using iostat (InfoDoc 45688).

Memory

PCI Card
  • SunPCi II and SunPCi IIpro cards may not respond after rapid/successive power cycling (FCO A0186-1).
  • A host system using the 375-0040-01 or -02 FC100/P FC-AL PCI card to attach to FC-AL storage (StorEdge A5x00 and A3500) may experience loop errors, which may affect data access to that storage (FCO A0164-1).
  • Systems with PCI FC-AL host adapter cards may experience loop reset problems, making the system unusable (only 41 cards are affected) (FCO A0160-1).
  • src/p card causes e450 to fail boot with upa-port error (SRDB 23897).
  • Gigabit Ethernet 2.0 card config causes slow cpu speed at bootup on UE450 (SRDB 22382).
  • Systems based on the PSYCHO chipset panic with a PCI bus error (SRDB 40602).
Power Supply
  • If one of the power supply (300-1302-02 or lower) loses power and becomes bad, it may not be identifiable through Front panel LED lit (FIN I0732-1)
  • There is a possibility of stripping the mounting screws when adding the power supply (FIN I0358-1).
